In 2016, Team Basti and I kicked off an epic Northern Mindanao adventure—after soaking up Camiguin’s island charm, we caught a ferry back to Cagayan de Oro (CDO) for the ultimate thrill: white water rafting.

Cagayan de Oro River

White water rafting is a popular activity along the Cagayan de Oro River. We decided to book our rafting experience with Kagay Whitewater Rafting, one of the most trusted and DOT-accredited outfitters in CDO.

Getting There

We hopped on Kagay’s complimentary jeepney transfer straight to the jump-off point in the morning. We opted for the 7:30 AM morning trip, not only to catch those cooler dawn currents but also because we had plans to head up to Dahilayan Forest Park in Bukidnon that same afternoon.

Us at the jump-off point

Meeting points are easy to find—either at Jollibee DV Soria or right at your hotel in the city proper—so you’ll be on the river before you know it.

Check out my Camiguin Travel Guide if you also opt to visit the island before or after the rafting experience.

Gearing Up for the Adventure

At the jump-off site, we were warmly welcomed by the Kagay team. They provided each of us with safety gear — a reliable life jacket, a sturdy helmet, and a paddle.

Us prepping for the adventure

After a quick but thorough safety briefing, we were divided into three groups of six, including one professional guide per boat who would instruct us on what to do throughout the adventure.

During the briefing

Adding to the security and excitement were two more guides trailing us in kayaks. Not only were they there for additional safety support, but they also captured some amazing photos and videos of our entire rafting journey. (Tip: You can avail their optional photo/video package for P700/group through their share app — totally worth it!)

What to Wear and Safety Reminders

Getting ready to hit the rapids? Here’s a quick guide to what you should wear to stay comfy and safe:

  • Quick-dry clothes: Wear a light, breathable shirt (like a rash guard) and shorts. Avoid denim or anything heavy that gets soggy.

  • Secure shoes: Old sneakers or aqua shoes with good grip are best. No flip-flops—your feet need protection on slippery surfaces!

  • un protection: Apply waterproof sunscreen, wear a cap with a strap, and bring sunglasses (also with a strap) if you like.

  • Waterproof essentials: If you’re bringing your phone or cash, use a waterproof pouch. But best to leave valuables behind if you can. You can also bring your GoPro or DJI action cams.

  • Change of clothes: Pack a dry set plus a small towel for after the ride—you’ll definitely want it!

Me, all ready for the adventure

While white water rafting in CDO is absolutely thrilling, it’s also a high-risk activity. Safety should be your top priority.

Make sure to listen carefully to the briefing, follow your guide’s instructions at all times, and wear your safety gear properly.

If you have any existing medical conditions, it’s best to consult your doctor before joining. Always remember: the river is wild and unpredictable — respect it.

Our Rafting Experience

We chose the Lower Section package, which cost P1,200 per person. This section offers a 2.5-hour river run featuring about 14 exhilarating rapids. It’s perfect for first-timers or those who want a balance of excitement and manageable difficulty.

We started the adventure with these first rapids near jump-off point

Once we started paddling, the adrenaline rush was instant. Every rapid we encountered was like a dance between our boat and the wild waters — thrilling, heart-pounding, yet insanely fun.

Huge rapids upcoming

We screamed, laughed, and shouted paddle commands in unison as the raft bounced and twisted through the rapids.

Here's one of the hardest rapids where we passed by a huge boulder or rocks

But rafting wasn’t just about the action. It also gave us a front-row view of CDO’s stunning natural beauty.

Appreciating the beauty of the nature

The lush green forests, the majestic rock formations jutting out from the riverbanks, and the pristine waters made the whole experience feel like a magical journey through an untouched paradise.

The guides let us swam where the river was calm

There were moments when the river calmed, allowing us to simply float and soak in the breathtaking surroundings.

Those serene pauses between rapids made the adventure even more special.
