Amidst the excitement surrounding upcoming public transportation projects like MRT-4, MRT-7, and the Metro Manila Subway Project, the expansion of the LRT-1 line is generating considerable buzz for the future of transportation in the metro. Known as the LRT-1 Cavite Extension, this project aims to elongate the existing LRT-1 route, stretching from Baclaran in Pasay to Bacoor in Cavite, covering approximately 11.8 kilometers of new railway tracks.

Once completed, the Cavite Extension will bolster the total number of LRT-1 stations from 20 to 28. Five stations will be strategically located in Parañaque City, with an additional one in Las Piñas and two in Bacoor, Cavite. This expansion has led to the project being commonly referred to as the South Extension Project.

What is LRT-1 Cavite Extension Project?

The Cavite Extension project will expand the LRT-1 network from 20 to 28 stations, spanning key cities such as Quezon City, Caloocan, Manila, Pasay, and Paranaque, extending all the way to Bacoor, Cavite. Once operational, the travel time from Pasay to Cavite is projected to be reduced to just 25 to 30 minutes, a significant improvement from the current duration of one hour and 30 minutes. With an estimated daily ridership of around 800,000 passengers, the extended route is poised to efficiently serve a large volume of commuters.

As of November 10, Phase 1 of the Cavite Extension has reached a progress rate of 94%, with the initial five stations nearing completion at rates of 70% and above. According to the Light Rail Manila Corporation, if the current pace is maintained, Phase 1 is anticipated to commence operations by the fourth quarter of 2024, with full operations expected by 2027.

Moreover, the Dr. Santos Station will feature a bus terminal, sports facility, and connectivity to SM City Sucat for added convenience and accessibility.

Timeline of the LRT-1 Cavite Extension

The LRT-1 Cavite Extension project is divided into two phases. Phase 1 encompasses five stations from Redemptorist to Dr. Santos, while Phase 2 covers the remaining three stations from Las Piñas to Niog. Once completed, the extension will add 32.4 kilometers to the LRT-1 railway network.

Construction for the Cavite Extension commenced in 2019, with Phase 2 construction scheduled to commence upon the completion of Phase 1. It is anticipated that Phase 1 will be operational by the fourth quarter of 2024.
