Philippine National Railways (PNR)
The Philippine National Railways (PNR), known as the Pambansang Daangbakal ng Pilipinas, stands as one of Asia's oldest railway systems, with roots tracing back to the Spanish colonial era.
PNR Metro Commuter Line
The PNR Metro Commuter Line is a commuter rail line operated by the Philippine National Railways. It was first inaugurated as the Metro Manila Commuter Service in 1970, and originally served the North Main Line and the South Main Lines, as well as the defunct Carmona and Guadalupe branch lines.
Since then, it adopted several names such as Metrotrak and Metrotren, before adopting its present name in the late 2000s. The line is also nicknamed the Orange Line due to its designation in the 1970s.

PNR Train Route (Metro Commuter Line)
The existing operational Metro Commuter Line is predominantly aligned and shares the path of the PNR South Main Line or SouthRail which uses a dedicated right of way of its own.
It terminates at Calamba Station despite having rails further towards Legazpi, Albay, but few trains stop at Sta. Rosa and Calamba Stations further to the south. Inter-provincial services such as the Bicol Express and Mayon Limited are not running as of 2015, but plans to revive the services have been presented.
PNR Calamba – Lucena
On Thursday, October 6, 2022, the PNR reopened its Calamba – Lucena – Calamba line, marking a significant milestone for commuters in the provinces of Laguna and Quezon. This restored route promises to serve residents and travelers from Calamba, San Pablo, and Lucena.
For commuters, the day begins early with the first trip departing from Lucena PNR station at 4:50 AM. The last trip from Calamba leaves at 6:30 PM, offering commuters ample time to travel between these key locations.

Travel times along this route are reasonably efficient, with the journey from Lucena to Calamba taking approximately two hours and 33 minutes, and from Lucena to San Pablo spanning one hour and 32 minutes.
For budget-conscious travelers, fares are kept affordable, with the minimum fare from Lucena to San Pablo priced at PHP 15, and from Lucena to Calamba at PHP 20, making rail travel accessible to a wide range of passengers.
The reopened line boasts nine flag makeshift stops, including Pansol, Masili, Los Banos, College, IRRI, Tiaong (Lalig), Candelaria, Lutucan, and Sariaya PNR stations. Meanwhile, the primary stations serve as key hubs in Lucena, San Pablo, and Calamba, ensuring connectivity and accessibility for commuters throughout the region.
2024 Update
On March 8, the Philippine National Railways announced its suspension of the operations. The PNR Metro Commuter Line is set to temporarily suspend the operations of Governor Pascual–Tutuban and Tutuban-Alabang routes to make way for the construction of the North-South Commuter Railway (NSCR) project.
Around 20,000 commuters daily will be affected by the five-year temporary suspension of the operations of the Philippine National Railways (PNR) in Metro Manila, according to an executive of the Department of Transportation (DOTr).
In a statement on Friday, Department of Transportation (DOTr) Secretary Jaime Bautista said the pause in operations will begin on March 28 and may save the government at least PHP15.8 billion in project cost and accelerate construction of the NSCR by eight months.

PNR Fare Rates
The PNR Metro Commuter Line uses a distance-based fare system. Currently, the rail operator charges ₱1.07 per kilometer. The minimum fare is ₱15.00. Fares are rounded up in multiples of ₱5.00.
Fares are 20-percent lower for passengers of non-air-conditioned trains. Additionally, senior citizens and persons with disability are also given 20-percent discount.
PNR issues paper tickets manually. Passengers caught without tickets, or short-ticketed, are charged the farthest distance fare of the service.
