MAGWAI - Founder & Creation

In 2016, 2 ocean-loving colleagues, Czar and Maffy, learned that the sunscreens that are widely available in the Philippines are toxic to corals. They went looking for reef-friendly alternatives but these weren’t easily available locally. This was unfortunate as the Philippines sits at the heart of the Coral Triangle. To help protect the coral reefs and ocean life, they then took on the challenge of developing a locally made reef-safe sunscreen.

MAGWAI started with Reef-Safe Sunscreen, which aims to reduce the chemical pollution that is harmful to corals. Their search for ocean-friendly alternatives has also led them to develop more products that show some love for the marine life instead of causing harm to it such as plastic-free Shampoo Bars multi-purpose towels made of recycled plastic bottles.

As of November 2022, MAGWAI has sold 25,700+ Shampoo Bars which is equivalent to reducing ~90,000 100mL plastic shampoo bottles from the landfill / oceans.

How should I drop-off my sunscreen tube?

Clean your sunscreen tube – Make sure all excess sunscreen has been rinsed off of the packaging. You can cut the tube in half to get rid of all the product. 

Dry sunscreen tube – Pat it down with a cloth or leave it out in the sun to dry. 

TIP: Got other plastic packaging you want to get rid of? Take them with you when you drop off your sunscreen tube to the nearest Plaf or Green Antz station. Just make sure that everything you donate is clean and dry!
