After 5 years, I'm back at the Puzzle Mansion - the largest collection of Jigsaw puzzles in the world.

I've got a first glimpse of this place wayback 2013 when me and my office-mates had a short day trip to Tagaytay (my second time to visit the city) in Cavite.

This time, I was back with my family and some of our friends to see more Jigsaw puzzles added to the collection.


The Puzzle Mansion is a museum in Tagaytay, Cavite, Philippines which hosts a collection of jigsaw puzzle which is recognized as the biggest in the world according to Guinness.

It opened in 2010 as a bed and breakfast place and was eventually transformed into a museum in November 2012 after Georgina Gil-Lacuna received an award from the Guinness World Records as the person with the largest collection of jigsaw puzzles in the world that same year.

This museum houses a total of 1,028 sets of jigsaw puzzles of all sizes, shapes, and forms defeating Brazil’s record of only 238 puzzles. 

The collection consists of 2D, 3D, and 4D puzzles including replications of world-renowned paintings like Las Meninas by Diego Velázquez, Michelangelo’s The Creation of Adam, and Mona Lisa by Leonardo Da Vinci to name a few.

MY SECOND VISIT

This time, I went with my family and some of our close friends. It was in August (off season) and it was really cold. Temperature is usually at 24 to 26 Celsius especially at night time. So if you would like to experience fog and the "Tagaytay Weather", you go visit this rainy season.

To start our museum tour, we were challenged by the steep road going to its entrance gate. Watch out for those who plans to bring own vehicle, make sure to have enough power to take this road.

There's enough space for parking inside. Upon entrance, you have to pay entrance fee to get your tickets. The fee only includes free pass to the museum and some parts of the mansion.

Of course, we headed to Gina Gil Lacuna's collection of jigsaw puzzle. I've been here 8 years ago and the room in the lower level looks almost the same. Most of the pieces displayed here are the exact ones I've seen before.

Except for this one, Lacuna's biggest jigsaw puzzle!


The puzzle is a replica of Adrian Chesterman’s famous painting called “The Wildlife” which consists of 33,600 puzzle pieces completed in just 1 year and 6 months’ time.

The previous record  is a pop art by American artist Keith Haring with 32,256 pieces completed in 4 months. Which I have seen in my first visit in 2013.


Lacuna’s fascination with jigsaw puzzles started at the age of 35 when she assembled a Mikey Mouse Racing puzzle as a gift for her son’s 2nd birthday. She spent at least 70 hours completing the 5,000-piece puzzle from Hong Kong.

Since then, her hobby of assembling and collecting puzzles grew, which enabled her to travel around the world to buy replica puzzles from international puzzle manufacturers. This hobby lasted for more than 30 years before she suffered a heart attack in 2014. 

We spent at least 2 hours exploring the whole place and ended it with their famous Coconut Cream Pie..


... and trying to complete a puzzle by ourselves.

The Puzzle Mansion also has its own merchandise upstairs where you can buy variety of Jigsaw puzzles from the easiest to the hardest available. Other merch like shirt, souvenirs and other items can be purchased.


After our hours of touring, we headed to Simply Epic Cafe which is located a few meters away from Puzzle Mansion's entrance.


HOW TO GET TO PUZZLE MANSION

Via Private Transportation
  1. From Metro Manila, take SLEX (South Luzon Expressway) and find your way to Sta. Rosa exit.
  2. Drive along Sta. Rosa – Tagaytay Road.
  3. Turn right when you reach Tagaytay – Calamba Road.
  4. Continue driving to Tagaytay – Nasugbu Highway.
  5. From Tagaytay Rotunda, signs on the road will lead you to the Puzzle Mansion. When you reach Maglabe Drive, turn right and follow the signs going to the Puzzle Mansion.

For those who are bringing own vehicle, you may use Waze or Google Maps for directions. If you don’t have a private vehicle, you can rent a car or van here.

Via Public Commute
  1. Take a bus bound to Nasugbu, Batangas.
  2. Follow the signages at the right side of the road. Tell the conductor to drop you at Maglabe Drive after passing the Mendez – Tagaytay Road.
  3. Take a tricycle ride to the Puzzle Mansion. Other choice is to wait for the Puzzle Mansion shuttle service picking up guests at the highway.
