Arts at BGC is a Project of Bonifacio Art Foundation, Inc.

The Bonifacio Art Foundation, Inc. (BAFI) is a nonprofit organization that catalyzes passion as it inhabits the core of the life of Bonifacio Global City (BGC). It does this by infusing the community with an appreciation for the arts and sciences.

BAFI's art program focuses on the evocative nature of the visual and performing arts. The urban landscape is a canvas rich with outdoor sculptures, mural gems, eclectic street performers, art-filled fairs, a vibrant community theater group and an arts center.


The BGC Arts Center is the premier home for the performing arts in BGC. It is a creative space for local and international productions as well as a learning center to nurture homegrown talent.

The sciences come alive in The Mind Museum, the multi-awarded and globally recognized science museum that is building a culture of scientific literacy in the country.

THE TREES

This sculpture was the first to be completed and unveiled in November 1997. It is an impression of a tree with three trunks as base and intertwining branches that create a dome-like structure. The three trunks signify stability while the branches and leaves symbolize the "circle of life", the interrelationships in nature and the vital role that each one plays.

The artist intended the piece as a reminder of the communal efforts needed to preserve the environment to sustain life and development for the present and for future generations.

ANG SUPREMO

This was the winning entry in the 1997 competition held to design a monument dedicated to Andres Bonifacio, founder of the revolutionary movement Katipunan. It was completed and installed in Bonifacio Global City in July 1998, the same year that commemorated the Philippine Centennial.

Ang Supremo

Made out of welded bronze sheets and brass armature, it is a 3-meter high group sculpture composed of three figures. Andres Bonifacio is depicted tearing apart his cedula, with his itak at his waist, symbolizing the uprising. His posture shows the courage, power, and respect according to him by his fellow Katipuneros.

The female figure is Bonifacio's wife, Gregoria de Jesus, symbolizing the Filipina waving the Philippine flag. The third figure is a Katipunero holding a spear. Together, the three figures represent "KKK", the symbol of the revolutionary movement.

KASAYSAYAN BAWAT ORAS

Another winning entry in the 1996 competition, Imao's design elements represent his Islamic heritage - the okir or curvilinear design motifs in Maranao art. The stylized rays of the sun transform into a bird - the sarimanok - that is just about ready to fly.

Kasaysayan Bawat Oras

This sculpture is designed to be interactive and functional. The sundial sculpture-cum-playground fuses function and art, one of the most ancient ways of telling time. The rays also represent the different provinces that rose against Spain during the revolution, while the paper-doll sculptures symbolize the 7,101 islands in unity.

The artist hopes that his sundial will be a reminder of how far our people have come and how far we can go on as a global community. Each figure represents a number corresponding to an hour. Find the location where the sun casts its shadow to determine the time.

BALANGHAI

Balanghai was the first prize-winning entry in the first competition held in 1996. Leonardo drew inspiration from our pre-colonial history: the boat known as balanghai used by the Malays who were among the early settlers in the Philippines and baranggay, the local name for the communities formed by these settlers.

Similarly, the artist also reflected then on the notion of the birth of a new community, a newly established baranggay that is now Bonifacio Global City. Balanghai is a stylized vinta or Moro boat with colorful and curvilinear sails representing the sarimanok and okir elements from Mindanao.

Designed as a kinetic sculpture, each sail responds individually to different wind shifts but reacts communally in an animated fashion. With its translucent sails, Balanghai represents the "vitality and dynamism of Filipinos, our animated and cheerful nature". It was completed in 2001 and was moved to its present site in 2002.

KASALIKASAN

This unique outdoor installation was described by the artist as a "living sculpture". It occupies a 3,556-square meter area and converges the theme of man and the environment. The title is a take off from the Spanish word "casa" meaning house, and Filipino word "kalikasan" meaning nature.

Kasalikasan

It is intended as an ideal natural place for human wellbeing and habitation. It is comprised of a mandala, an area for mediation and prayer surrounded by an elevated circular stage covered with carabao grass, a sandbox, and pebbled pathways.

TRANSFORMATION

The base of the sculpture is a pool shaped like the abstracted silhouette of the Philippine archipelago. The three towers, rendered in different heights, represent the islands of Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao, thus representing the transformation not only of the city but of the country as well.

Transformation

Calma conceived of this sculpture keeping in mind both the Bonifacio Global City and the country. The vision of transforming a military base into a city at par with the best cities inspired him to use glass as medium, a representation of a diamond in the rough. This material is complemented by other enduring materials namely granite and stainless steel.

PASASALAMAT

This sculpture was a direct commission project designed after Balanghai was moved to its current site. Starting with the existing hull, Cacnio conceived of a fishing scene with two figures standing in the middle of a banca holding up their fishing nets heavy with a bountiful harvest. The figures are elongated, emphasizing on its vertical orientation.

PASASALAMAT

They are gazing upwards as if solemnly thanking and offering the fruits of their labors to God. They are also rendered with rough surface texture, symbolic of human flaws. The net is undulating, mimicking the fluid movement of the waves of the water.

TINSTAEJ #85

The title is an acronym for the artist's series of graphic works titled "There Is No Such Thing As Eternal Joy". A distinct element is the silhouette of a teddy bear that appears in a series of digitally manipulated photographs.

For this public art project, Velasco collaborated with Reg Yuson by allowing the latter to execute the flat teddy bear design into a massive structure made of steel and finished with blue pastel-colored aircraft paint. This translation further changes our usual notion of the teddy bear as cute, cuddly, and soft. Amusingly, this shadow-like figure casts its own permanent shadow on the ground.

BEARABLE LIGHTNESS

This sculpture is a collaborative work with visual artist and writer Ronald Achacoso who designed the centrifugal pattern rendered in analogous colors blue, green, and yellow.

BEARABLE LIGHTNESS

Its cantilevered structure invites the public to climb on top of the platform to interact with the structure and to imbibe the sensations relating to tensions between gravity and weightlessness, surface and depth. Its capacity, however, has been limited to a maximum of four medium-weight adults.

HEARSAY 

Hearsay is a pun on the Filipino's penchant for tsismis or the grapevine. It is composed of twisted pipes connected below the ground and can be used as a playful tool to help children communicate. The pipes are finished in bright green paint that stands out against the grassy surface.

PRESENCE

This is an installation composed of 20 freestanding floor chimes arranged in rows like soldiers standing in attention, recalling the military history of Fort Bonifacio.

The pipes are attached with coil springs and are finished in aircraft paint, applied in varied thickness that alters the sound considerably. The idea is to invite visitors to nudge the individual chimes thus producing sounds to invite good vibes that can fill up the entire park.

SPECIFIC GRAVITY

The artist designed a huge suspended boulder fountain suspended by three curving stainless steel poles, seemingly defying the natural order of things.

Crags and crevices on the boulder's surface make one wonder if it will give in piece by piece or will it fall in one big loud thud. Water continuously flows from it (and through an internal filtration mechanism), emphasizing on its suspended height yet providing an ironic source of calm.

ALAB NG PUSO

"Alab ng Puso" (Fire in the Heart) by sculptor Daniel de la Cruz is the BGC tribute to the Filipino soldier. It portrays the Filipino soldier, with his weapon set aside, reading a letter from his family.

ALAB NG PUSO

Behind him is a steel panel with the shining words of "Lupang Hinirang." On the steps are words that mean "love", "sacrifice", "freedom", "peace", and "hope" in Filipino and in a number of other Philippine languages.

Inspired by Gong Shih, or the Spirit Rocks of the Ming Dynasty, this stony, stainless steel hill adds repose to the hectic pace around it.

An immovable silver rock, rising from the earth, strong and solitary, polished to a mirror sheen to reflect the world around it day and night. An immutable silent witness, set in a garden, to the birth and death of Development, Life and Progress.

ALAB NG PUSO

"Alab ng Puso" (Fire in the Heart) by sculptor Daniel de la Cruz is the BGC tribute to the Filipino soldier. It portrays the Filipino soldier, with his weapon set aside, reading a letter from his family.

ALAB NG PUSO

Behind him is a steel panel with the shining words of "Lupang Hinirang." On the steps are words that mean "love", "sacrifice", "freedom", "peace", and "hope" in Filipino and in a number of other Philippine languages.
