I've been to Baguio thrice (2011, 2012 and 2019) and each trip gave me different experiences and memories. Growing up in Metro Manila, Baguio seems to be a dream destination to me since I was a kid.
There's so much to discover in the city that I want to experience. I actually dreamt of living here for a short time.
So when the time came that I got to earn for myself, I saved a little for my first Baguio visit in 2011. It was sometime in September when I went with a friend who toured me in the city.
Me at Mines View in 2012 |
Most of the tourist spots such as Session Road, Burnham Park, Wright Park, The Mansion, Mines View and more, I've visited them all during my first and second visit. However, for the 3rd time, since me, my family and some of my friends brought a car, we did a chill tour in the city.
In this guide, I will share some of the things you need to know before visiting Baguio City.

Baguio City was first called "Kafagway" by the locals. The name "Baguio" originates from the American period and is derived from the Ibaloi word bagiw (moss), which was then Hispanicized as "Baguio". A demonym for natives of the city, "Ibagiw", is also derived from bagiw. It is also the name for the city's annual arts festival.
Baguio was established as a hill station by the United States in 1900 at the site of an Ibaloi village known as Kafagway. It was the United States' only hill station in Asia.
Baguio is classified as a Highly-Urbanized City (HUC). It is geographically located within Benguet, serving as the provincial capital from 1901 to 1916, but has since been administered independently from the province following its conversion into a chartered city.
The city is a major center of business, commerce, and education in northern Luzon, as well as the location of the Cordillera Administrative Region. According to the 2015 census, Baguio has a population of 345,366.
BEST TIME TO VISIT BAGUIO CITY
Baguio enjoys cool temperature year-round. November to April is the driest period, which is great if you’re planning on spending most of your time exploring. This means there is very little chance of heavy rain to put a damp on your itinerary.
December to February is the coldest period and it will steadily rise until May, but it’s still pretty chilly especially at night.
If you love festivals, visit in February when the Panagbenga (Baguio Flower Festival) is in full swing and see the grand parade of flowers. But expect thick crowds everywhere.
June to September is the wettest period, not ideal for touring. But if you’re love the foggy mountain atmosphere, then I suggest you go during this period.
Lastly, I recommend you travel during weekdays if possible since a huge crowd is expected on weekends.
BAGUIO DURING COVID-19 PANDEMIC
Baguio City during lockdown for COVID-19 |
Baguio City immediately shut down and closed their doors for tourism when COVID-19 outbreak happened in the Philippines. Pres. Rodrigo R. Duterte placed the whole island of Luzon on a lockdown or Enhanced Community Quarantine starting March 15, 2020.
Sometime in June, Baguio LGU announced that the city will not reopen until September 2020. The city was also put under Modified General Community Quarantine or MGCQ the same month.
Early September 2020, the LGU and its tourism board announced a "travel bubble" for Baguio City and Region I wherein each places will open their doors for tourist following their implemented protocols.
On September 22, 2020, Baguio City LGU announced delay of reopening. Tourists will have to wait a bit longer before visiting Baguio City.
In Octorber, Baguio reopens for Luzon tourists. “Now that we have an actual visitor count, the city has an important reference point and valuable feedback on how to move forward from this initial opening period,” Tourism chief Bernadette Romulo-Puyat said.
“It was a privilege to be working closely with the local government of Baguio during this process. We witnessed first-hand how they came up with effective policies to find the delicate balance between ensuring public safety and reopening for tourism to bring back jobs and livelihoods lost to the pandemic," the Tourism chief said.

The first step in scheduling a visit to Baguio City is to register for an account with Baguio VISITA, a new tourism assistance project by the city government, in partnership with the Department of Tourism and the Tourism Promotions Board. VISITA stands for VISitor Information and Travel Assistance.

DID YOU KNOW?
- Did you know that it was once possible to fly to Baguio? Before, when the roads to Baguio weren’t as developed and it would take you about 10-12 hours to get there by car, it was possible to just fly there.
- Sky Pasada used to offer flights from Metro Manila to Baguio, landing at Loakan Airport.
- The flight took approximately 45 minutes, and there was at least one per day.
- As of October 2012, Sky Pasada has stopped offering flights to Baguio.
GETTING AROUND BAGUIO
Taxis and jeepneys are the main modes of transportation in Baguio. You can find taxi cabs anywhere and you will find that the rates are much cheaper than those from Metro Manila. The drivers are also kind and accommodating; you will never have to worry about drivers not giving back the change.
If you’re planning on using the Grab app, Grab drivers often times don’t really use the app and you will have better chances of getting a taxi by hailing one yourself. We did once during midnight since the place of our accommodation is located outside the city proper.
Jeepneys, of course, are the more affordable option. Similar to taxi cabs, you can find jeepneys almost anywhere and their routes cover tourist destinations as well.
But what I love in this city is that you can also travel on foot. Within the city proper, you can just walk around since many of tourist attractions are located nearby.
FACT: Baguio doesn't have tricycles for hire. Imagine, riding a tricycle on a hilly roads of Baguio? hehe
