Found in Barangay Kapasigan in Pasig is this local store that sells original and authentic Japanese food.
Osaka Pancake provides you the taste of the old city Osaka, Japan. Their main products are Takoyaki, Yakisoba and their authentic Okonomiyaki (AKA the Osaka Pancake).
Takoyaki and Okonomiyaki |
Amongst the three, their best-seller is their Takoyaki.
Osaka Pancake's best-selling takoyaki |
The Takoyaki balls' outer layer was perfectly fried. Inside is soft and hot (caution: it's really, really hot!!). You can taste and feel the octopus bits. The sauce was a bit salty and perfectly matched with Japanese mayo. Of course, bonito flakes on top were swaying while the takoyaki is hot, calling it "takoyaking buhay".
Okonomiyaki is a Japanese savoury pancake containing a variety of ingredients. The name is derived from the word okonomi, meaning "how you like" or "what you like", and yaki meaning "grill".
Okonomiyaki AKA "Osaka Pancake" |
Their version of Okonomiyaki is the one that is predominant and can be found throughout most of Japan. The batter is made of flour, grated nagaimo (a type of yam), water or dashi, eggs and shredded cabbage, and usually contains other ingredients such as green onion, meat (generally thin pork belly, often mistaken for bacon), octopus, squid, shrimp, vegetables, konjac, mochi or cheese. Okonomiyaki is sometimes compared to an omelette or a pancake and may be referred to as a "Japanese pizza" or "Osaka soul food".
Another best seller they have is their Yakisoba. Yakisoba (焼きそば), literally "fried buckwheat," or sōsu yakisoba (ソース焼きそば) (the same, but in sauce). It first appeared in food stalls in Japan during the early 20th century. Although soba means buckwheat, typically suggesting noodles made from that flour in mainland Japan, yakisoba noodles are made from wheat flour. It is typically flavored with a condiment similar to oyster sauce.

We also tried their Tonkotsu Ramen. Imagine for only P139, you can have this bowl of hot and savoury Japanese noodle soup. Me and my wife shared it.

Do you know that you can have a FREE Okonomiyaki on your birthday? YES! It's their treat! :)
